Assignment 3:
Most teachers have diverse students with different learning needs. Universal Design for Learning minimizes barriers and maximizes learning for all students. So what is the Universal Design for Learning. To understand the mean of the term, we can break it down. Universal - curriculum should be learned and understood by every student. Learning - The learning process involves the students gain of knowledge, skills, and motivation for learning. Design - the method in which the curriculum is built so that it is flexible and accessible for all students. To design a UDL lesson, a teacher should first think, "What is my goal?" Then she must take note of "What are the Barriers?" Using the three principles of UDL teachers can overcome the barriers that exist in learning: Firstly, the information should be represented in different ways to accommodate students with different learning styles. Second, teachers should provide multiple means of action and expression for students to express what they have learned. Lastly, teachers should provide different means of engagement - give them choices of activities. The main factor in UDL is to always keep in mind the learning goal. When the learning goal is clear, you can provide different ways for students to meet that goal.
